Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors, but hot weather can be challenging for babies. Since newborns and young babies cannot regulate their body temperature as efficiently as adults, they are more vulnerable to overheating and dehydration. Knowing how to keep your baby hydrated, cool, and comfortable can make all the difference during warm summer days.
In this blog, you'll discover practical tips to help protect your baby in hot weather. We'll explain how to ensure your little one gets enough fluids, the safest ways to keep them cool, and how to create the ideal sleeping environment when temperatures rise.
Baby in Hot Weather: How to Prevent Overheating and Dehydration
Sunny summer days are great for spending time outside, but high temperatures can be stressful for babies. Because babies are still developing their ability to regulate body temperature, they need extra care during hot weather. Follow these three simple tips to help your baby stay safe, cool, and comfortable throughout the summer.
1. Keep Your Baby Well Hydrated
If you're breastfeeding, don't hesitate to offer the breast more frequently during hot weather. Babies often need extra fluids when temperatures rise, so feeding on demand helps prevent dehydration. Breast milk naturally adapts to your baby's needs and remains the best source of nutrition and hydration.
Once your baby is around six months old and has started eating solid foods, you can also offer a few sips of water throughout the day. This helps maintain healthy hydration during warm weather.
If your baby is exclusively breastfed or formula-fed and has not yet started solids, additional water is generally not necessary. Breast milk or infant formula provides all the fluids your baby needs.
2. Keep Your Baby Cool
Prevention is always better than treatment. Dress your baby in lightweight, breathable cotton clothing and avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day between late morning and early evening.
A lukewarm bath is a safe way to help your baby cool down. You can also gently wipe your baby's face, neck, and arms with a soft damp washcloth. Avoid using very cold water, as sudden temperature changes may make your baby uncomfortable.
If your baby develops heat rash, a lukewarm bath can also help soothe irritated skin. After bathing, gently pat the skin dry and allow it to air dry as much as possible.
3. Create a Cool and Comfortable Sleep Environment
Quality sleep is especially important during hot weather. The ideal room temperature for a baby is 16–18°C (61–64°F). If the nursery becomes warmer, ventilate the room early in the morning or later in the evening when outdoor temperatures are lower.
Many babies sleep less comfortably when it's hot. Choose lightweight bedding and keep the sleep environment as cool and breathable as possible. When the room temperature is above 20°C (68°F), a lightweight summer sleep sack is often enough. If temperatures exceed 25°C (77°F), your baby may sleep comfortably wearing just a short-sleeved bodysuit with a lightweight summer sleep sack.
Every Baby Responds Differently to Heat
Every baby reacts differently to warm weather, so pay close attention to your baby's cues and adjust clothing, hydration, and sleeping arrangements when needed.
By offering enough fluids, keeping your baby cool, and creating a safe and comfortable sleeping environment, you can help your little one enjoy a happy, healthy, and safe summer.
